Stockholm syndrome

It was rumored that Natascha Kampusch cried when she found out her kidnapper, Wolfgang Priklopil had killed himself. And in her statement to the press she said "In my view his death was unnecessary. A penalty would not have been the end of the world. He was a part of my life and this is why I am, in a way, mourning him."
This strange hostage-taker bonding is commonly called Stockholm syndrome , and it is psychological response commonly seen in hostages even when they have been put in a risky or degrading situation.

Another interesting case of Stockholm syndrome is of millionaire heiress and actress Patty Hearst.
In 1973 Hearst was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army, in attempt by the group to swap her by jailed SLA members.
Later she joined the SLA and even robbed a bank together with the SLA group. After her arrest (together with other SLA members) , the defense in court envolved largely around the claim she suffered Stockholm syndrome.

Its a crazy world...
